Suga’s Story Before BTS

Min Yoongi was born on March 9, 1993, in Daegu, South Korea. Raised in a modest household, he grew up surrounded by financial struggles, but music quickly became his lifeline.
He discovered hip-hop after hearing Stony Skunk’s Ragga Muffin, and later, Epik High deepened his love for rap. By middle school, he was writing his own lyrics, learning MIDI production, and building beats. At just 17, he joined the underground rap crew D-Town under the name Gloss, producing and performing in Daegu’s local hip-hop scene.
Life wasn’t easy: he often had to choose between bus fare or food. Yet, he never gave up. Music wasn’t just a dream — it was survival.

Training at BigHit

In 2010, Yoongi auditioned for BigHit’s “Hit It” competition and won 2nd place. Originally, he planned to be a producer, not an idol. But Bang Si-hyuk convinced him to join BTS as both rapper and producer.
He moved to Seoul and began training in November 2010. Adjusting was tough: long hours, financial stress, and an old shoulder injury from his delivery job made life exhausting. Still, Yoongi never stopped creating. Even as a trainee, he was already contributing beats and lyrics to BTS’s early songs.
Learning to dance was one of his biggest challenges — he once admitted he never pictured himself as a dancer — but perseverance turned him into a performer who commands the stage.
The name Suga was given by Bang PD, while Agust D became his solo identity: “DT” for Daegu Town + “Suga” reversed.

Suga in BTS

When BTS debuted in 2013, Suga established himself as one of the group’s main rappers and producers. From No More Dream to Spring Day to Daechwita, his fingerprints are everywhere. His rap style is sharp, raw, and unapologetically honest.
He’s co-written and produced dozens of BTS tracks, shaping their sound across albums. His lyrics often confront depression, self-doubt, and societal pressures, giving fans a safe space to feel seen.
As a solo artist, Suga shines as Agust D:
Agust D (2016) — fiery, raw, unfiltered storytelling.
D-2 (2020) — introspection, identity, and global recognition.
D-Day (2023) — his official solo album, completing his trilogy with powerful themes of acceptance and growth.
On stage, Suga is known for his cool, composed presence — but when it’s his turn, he delivers verses that electrify the entire arena. Off stage, he’s witty, straightforward, and often called “Grandpa Yoongi” for his calm (and sometimes sleepy) demeanor.
