Who is Kim Seokjin, Jin of BTS?

The world calls him Worldwide Handsome — and for once, the world is absolutely correct. But Jin is so much more than just a face. He’s a vocalist, actor-at-heart, foodie, gamer, and the oldest member of BTS who somehow manages to be the group’s eternal “madnae” (the oldest but often the most playful).

Jin’s Story Before BTS

Kim Seokjin was born on December 4, 1992, in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi-do. Growing up in a middle-class family, Jin had a cheerful and playful personality that made him stand out. Unlike most idols, however, Jin didn’t spend his childhood dreaming of being a singer. His first love was acting.
Inspired by Korean dramas and movies, Jin pursued theater and film studies, eventually entering Konkuk University — one of South Korea’s top schools for acting. At the time, music was not even on his radar.
His first brush with the entertainment industry came when he was scouted by SM Entertainment in high school. But since he wasn’t interested in music then, he turned it down. Fate, however, wasn’t done with him.
In 2011, on his way to university, Jin was discovered again — this time by a BigHit scout. Initially, BigHit was impressed by his visuals and recruited him as an actor trainee, but soon his path shifted toward music. Though he had no prior vocal or dance training, BigHit believed in his potential and welcomed him into the trainee program.

Training at BigHit

Unlike some members who had years of experience, Jin started his training journey from zero. Singing, dancing, stage presence — everything had to be built from the ground up.
It wasn’t easy. Jin struggled, especially with dance, but his persistence and strong sense of responsibility pushed him to keep practicing. He often stayed late at night, rehearsing vocals and choreography until he felt he could match his teammates.
As the oldest member, Jin quickly became a supportive figure within the group. He was like the older brother who could cook, joke, and comfort everyone when the stress of training became too heavy. His humor, warmth, and resilience made him a beloved presence in the dorms long before debut.

Jin in BTS

When BTS debuted in 2013, Jin stepped into the spotlight as the group’s visual and vocalist. At first, some doubted whether someone with little training could keep up — but Jin proved them wrong. His steady vocals and natural stage presence quickly made him an essential part of the group’s sound and image.
As years passed, Jin’s voice matured into a powerful tenor that shines especially in ballads and emotional tracks. Songs like Epiphany, Awake, and Moon became fan favorites, showcasing his ability to pour raw feeling into every note.
Outside of vocals, Jin brought his unique humor and warmth to BTS’s image. His infamous “Worldwide Handsome” declaration became a global meme, and his dad jokes are now ARMY legend. He also built his own solo identity with Eat Jin mukbangs, his gaming enthusiasm, and his affectionate role as the hyung who takes care of everyone.
On stage, Jin is often the source of heartfelt moments — like his flying kisses during concerts — that leave ARMY swooning. Off stage, he’s the comforting big brother and the glue that helps keep the group’s dynamic light and joyful.

Legacy

Now, he’s not only Worldwide Handsome, but also a worldwide inspiration — a reminder that dreams can be rewritten, skills can be learned, and sometimes the most unexpected paths lead to the brightest stars.
